아래에는 개념미술가 Joseph Beuys 의 Fat for heat, Felt for Warmth 전시리뷰 일부분입니다.
Walking into *** Gallery located in the lower east side of Manhattan, a picture of Beuys’ first and the most significant solo action, How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare (1965), was hanging on the wall along with 5 other pieces of his work. During How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare performance, Beuys locked himself inside a gallery space, leaving the spectators outside, where they could only observe the performance through the glass windows. Beuys covered his face with honey and gold leaf, transforming himself into a sculpture. He wore one shoe with felt on its sole and another with an iron sole; he wandered around the room with a dead hare in his arm. He whispered to the dead hare, explaining each artwork in the gallery. This outrageous action continued on for three hours as the entire performance was filmed and photographed. Every item in the room had a specific purpose in its symbolism as well as its literal significance. Honey symbolized the potential human capacity for thought and expression beyond the rational. The hare, according to Beuys, stood in for our "deadening" intellectualizing tendencies to burrow into the "materialistic".

Beuys’ art is not meant to be understood in a shallow, cerebral, and intellectual way. Rather, it should be understood as a means to embolden the sensorial perceptions and further strengthen the creative potential of human beings. The term ‘understanding’ applies as an elevation of inner creative power as the senses become sharper, richer, and much more potent, that through intuition, inspiration, and imagination, the present thinking structure is able to advance beyond purely intellectual realm.
Beuys delivers a clear message through his work. As he advocated that a “pure mind, a mind that is not attached to one interpretation, exists within everyone,” he condemned the seriousness and exclusiveness of the art market. Beuys used unconventional materials such as felt, fat, copper cane, sled and rabbit blood to criticize the current authoritarian and capitalist system. As an alternative, he believed in the power of shamanistic worldview. He believed that this power has a potential to revolutionize the mind, which could lead to a transcendence of the existing ideologies and social structures.
By embracing the general public for his lectures and performances, Beuys brought art into the everyday. Art was a way of communication and expression of freedom. Perhaps we may very well relate to the issues of German society in Beuys’ time—struggle for lower tuition, living in a divided nation and a failure to communicate. Thus, it cannot be more timely to pursue Beuys’ tenacious practice of communicating and executing freedom through art. He also reminds us that human beings are innately creative and free. Beuys truly hoped for humanity to enjoy the freedom and envisioned art to contribute to creating such reality.
